One Piece × Cloud9
Two giants, one collection. One Piece brings decades of devotion and a fanbase that notices everything. Cloud9 brings its own loud identity and zero interest in being a logo placed politely in a corner. The job was to make the partnership feel like a genuine meeting of the two, not a co-sign.
The challenge wasn't only combining the worlds visually, but deciding how they should interact. Too much One Piece, and Cloud9 becomes a corner logo. Too much Cloud9, and the collaboration risks disrespecting the source. Get it wrong and you alienate one audience to flatter the other, and this audience reads every detail closely.
I worked on the brand strategy that governed how the two worlds were allowed to touch: which references were sacred, which were open to reinterpretation, and where each brand's energy should lead. Then I designed apparel directly.
There's a particular pressure to drawing pieces that thousands of fans will measure against canon. You're being read by people who know the source better than you do. The principle throughout was respect without timidity: honor the source, but bring something unmistakably Cloud9; push the references far enough to feel fresh, never so far that they read as careless. The garments also had to work as things people genuinely want to wear, not just collect.
A licensed collab falls apart the moment it feels transactional. The design has to convince fans someone in the room actually cared.
The line worked because both audiences could wear it without reservation. One Piece fans saw their world handled with care; Cloud9 fans saw their org show up with confidence. A collaboration that earned the “×” in its name.
