Immortal: Gates of Pyre

Immortal: Gates of Pyre is a fantasy real-time strategy game from SunSpear Games, a studio of veteran StarCraft modders building their first original title. It needed an identity that could carry a studio's flagship from announcement to launch: new IP, no existing equity, a deep invented world.

01The Challenge

A new IP starts with nothing for the audience to recognize. The identity had to build belief from zero, then hold up across very different contexts. A logo that works small and animated. A type system that reads in long-form lore and in tight interface labels. A visual language consistent enough to tie distinct in-world factions under one brand. And all of it had to stay coherent against a game that was still changing underneath us.

02My Role

I led, directed, and was principal designer for the branding and visual identity. The starting point was the world itself, a universe where ancient powers lie dormant and rival nations rise to claim them, with players cast as godlike commanders. My job was to turn that premise into an identity that read as serious strategy but still felt like somewhere you'd want to spend time.

03The Solution

Most of the work was system-building. The centerpiece was a custom glyph font, designed from scratch, an entire writing system that gave Pyre its own native script. That meant working like a type designer, a worldbuilder, and a linguist at the same time: dozens of characters that stay consistent, legible against pure invention, governed by a logic the eye trusts even when the mind can't read it. Alongside it, I kept the agency's output aligned with the studio's developers, artists, and creative leads, holding the brand steady against a live production.

Building the glyph font from scratch meant inventing a language's handwriting, every character native to a world that didn't exist yet.

04The Result

A complete brand foundation for a studio's flagship, built to scale from early campaign through launch. The glyph system, the brand direction, and the coordination work turned Immortal into a more coherent world, one where the identity didn't sit on top of the game but felt embedded inside it. Of everything here, this project asked for the widest range, and that breadth is what made it worth doing.
